70-year-old woman brutalized in a Chinese prison while serving time for her faith
3 min readIt boggles the mind that in our day and age of intelligence and “sophistication” that barbaric acts such as these still exist today. A 70-year old woman has become incapacitated while imprisoned for not renouncing the love of her faith.
Ms. Liang Huaiyuan, 70, a resident of Bengbu City, Anhui Province, was arrested on February 2016 for talking to people about an ancient qigong practice called Falun Gong. (The practise has high principles and consists of 5 exercises including meditation)
She was sentenced to jail three months later.
While serving time at Anhui Province Women’s Prison, Ms. Liang suffered declining health. Liang was sent to the prison hospital in September 2017.
Her daughter, Ms. Liang Yu, was also arrested the same year. She was released in 2019 after serving three torturous years in jail.
Ms. Liang Yu was given the run-around between Anhui Province Women’s Prison and the prison hospital when she requested to see her mother.
Ms. Liang later hired a lawyer to represent her family. With the lawyer’s help, she finally saw her mother in the hospital for the first time in July 2019.
Ms. Liang Yu said she couldn’t stop crying the moment she saw her mother, who had become completely paralyzed and was hooked to a feeding tube and catheter.
“Mom could no longer talk. She could only blink her eyes at me.
Seeing that I was crying, she struggled to hold out her hand to me, but she had trouble moving her arm. The guards that were watching her blocked me from getting close to her,” Ms. Liang said.
The lawyer submitted a medical parole request for Ms. Liang Huaiyuan after the visit.
Her daughter had already requested medical parole several times before, to no avail. At the time of writing, the lawyer hadn’t received any response to the parole request.
Ms. Liang Yu said she doubted whether the prison is providing her mother with proper medical treatment.
“There are still two years left to her term; I’m really worried whether Mom can make it through,” she said.
According to a person who was previously held at the same hospital, she told Ms. Liang that the prison guards once stripped her down to her underwear and shackled her to a chair with her arms suspended above her. The male guards surrounded her and laughed and humiliated her.
Ms. Liangsaid that her mother was once paralyzed for more than 40 days after being injected with toxic drugs.
Her daughter suspects that her mother might have been injected with nerve-damaging drugs again in prison.
