2 min readJesus won’t save you — President Xi Jinping will, all Chinese Christians are being told. The Chinese Communist Party tells Chinese Christians to take down pictures of Jesus and put up a nice picture of President Xi Jinping.
This is what thousands of villagers are being told. It’ the face of the growing cult of personality of China’s powerful leader.
In Jiangxi Province’s Yugan county villagers apparently”willingly” removed the bible quotes and images and replaced them with 453 images of Xi. It is a reminder of the time when Communist China’s first leader Mao Zedong’s picture was displayed in every home. Framed quotes with the words ” help those who believe in religions into believing in the party” was the order o the day.
Party members visit villagers and spread the communist ideology to instill in the minds of the people that would “melt the hard ice in the hearts of religious believers and help turn them into believers of the party.”
Qi Yan Chairman of the people ‘s congress in the township of Huangjinbu Yugan county and the man in charge of the local poverty alleviation effort told the South Morning Post that villagers “should no longer rely on Jesus but on the party for help”
“Many poor households have plunged into poverty because of illness in the family. Some resorted to believing in Jesus to cure their illnesses,” Qi said. “But we tried to tell them that getting ill is a physical thing and that the people who can really help them are the Communist Party and General Secretary Xi.”
Many rural people are ignorant. They think God is their savior,” he said. “After our cadres’ work, they’ll realize their mistakes and think: We should no longer rely on Jesus, but on the party for help.”
During his speech at the congress, Xi said religion must be guided by the party to adapt to a socialist society.
